While Grades Six through Eight are officially part of the Upper School, Rivermont Collegiate recognizes that the needs of Middle School-aged students are different from those of other students. Their academic program has a structure distinct from that of the rest of Upper School - a different daily class schedule, a more comprehensive advising system that begins with a homeroom advisory period, and more physical education and health opportunities.
Students in Middle School take full-credit classes in English, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, and Math. Their schedule also includes Physical Education and Health and Specials.
Courses outside the core curriculum are referred to as Specials. Through these specials Middle School students are exposed to Art, Latin, Drama, Music (band and choir), and Computer Instruction each year. Specials are taught as a two-day per week course for one trimester.
The homeroom teacher acts as the primary advisor at each grade level. Homeroom teachers receive weekly academic updates about each student's progress from each teacher who interacts with that student. The advisor is able to share student progress with the student and parents. The schedule also allows time for guidance in areas such as team building, leadership and decision-making.
Students find self-expression through participation in a variety of co-curricular activities such as athletics, Computer Club, Drama Club and National Honor Society.
