In honor of the TV series "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" that airs on Your Fox 18 every Sunday night, we're recognizing local science scholars with our "Cosmos Student of the Week" honor.
This week's featured student is Suhas Seshadri, a Rivermont Collegiate junior who's already using his smarts to do some good.
At 16 years old, Suhas Seshadri is a dedicated pianist. He spends a lot of his at-home time tickling the ivories, or he's in his study room working on things like anatomy and physiology.
Suhas says he would like to get into the medical field someday, potentially cardiology.
"The heart is so interesting. It's a small organ but can do so much. It's what keeps us alive as well," he said.
Science has had a special place in his heart since middle school and this term Suhas is volunteering as a chemistry lab assistant working with other students. In India this past summer for a family vacation Suhas wanted to complete his junior year service project working with a local school. He volunteered for a week to help teach classes and reorganize their school library.
Back at home he's also raising money to continue to help those students.
"These kids don't have the proper resources and the president of the school wants to provide them with that and there are a lot of smart kids there
As a local science scholar his teacher nominated him to be Cosmos Student of the Week.
"I was the first one nominated from the school. I was like, wow that's big. So it's an honor," Suhas said.
