My Favorite Passage From the Tao Te Ching

As we approach our summer break, it's natural to take a moment to reflect back on the academic year. So as I write this post, looking across my very messy desk with papers strewn this way and that, I caught sight of our colorful yearbook emblazoned with our school's wheel. Instantly this reminds me of my favorite passage from the Tao Te Ching. For those that may not know, I'm a fairly avid reader of eastern philosophy, especially Taoism. My wife Sheri will say it's a little beyond that as I have collected more books on Taoism that I have had the opportunity to read yet . . . so I can never comment on how many pairs of shoes she owns.

One of my favorite passages in the Tao Te Ching describes a wheel, reflecting that while the strength of a wheel lies in its spokes, it is the space in the middle upon which everything hinges. I think this captures the essence of our school. It is the support and dedication of our parents, the passion and talents of our faculty and staff, the guidance of our Board, and most important the laughter and enthusiasm of our students that collectively form the spokes of our wheel and make Rivermont such a unique and special school. It is our center, the combination of all our strengths that transport our wheel down the path. Thank you for being such an integral part of our school's wheel this past year!

As we wrap up this year, I would like to highlight a WONDERFUL school event that is just around the corner on Sunday, June 7th!

A Taste of Rivermont is a relaxed family-orientated carnival celebrating Rivermont within the Quad Cities Community. It also is one of our biggest fund-raining events of the year. The guiding concept behind the event is to celebrate our school, its families and students within our community. Besides, it is going to be a lot of fun!

There will be twelve booths from area restaurants offering food samples from every corner of the globe. There will be exceptional music performances from River Music Experience's Winter Blues All-Stars, the Barley House Band, and our own Rivermont Choir! A silent auction will be displaying a myriad of fun and exciting items to bid upon. There are great activities for the children as well with a blow-up obstacle course, juggling, balloon animals and face painting. Not to mention the drawing of our Grand Raffle!

Our Taste of Rivermont event promises to be a fun filled afternoon for a tremendously low cost. Admission for adults is $10, with children age 4-12 at $5. With admission comes unlimited use of all the activities and tickets to sample all the international food booths, including options for the pickiest of eaters.

I would like to thank our event sponsors whose support made this afternoon possible. Also a round of applause to our tireless event planning staff!

Tickets are on sale now, or can be purchased at the event itself.

So come out and enjoy the sunshine! Invite your friends and neighbors, spread out a blanket and enjoy wonderful food, music and fellowship!
